Faction Deepening: legibility ranking and six deepening proposals
Ranks the factions by legibility against Megiddo and deepens the six least loved flags (Miss Terri's, Adrasteia, NiteLife, Lightsail, Ewan Hart, Alakrita). Each note separates established lore and the operator's archived words from proposals for canon, and ties back to Faction Play's levers and Ship Design Language. # Faction Deepening
> **Status: brainstorming, Imagination pass of 2026-10-03.** Not canon. Each deepening note separates what the vault already says from what it proposes; everything under a note's **Proposal for canon** heading needs the operator's ruling.
Operator brief, 2026-10-03: "This is kinda Ghostlight territory but I'd like to do a pass on the Aetheria lore to spice up and deepen some of the factions that haven't gotten any love. Like, we can describe how Megiddo behave, how they design their stuff, because we know so much about them. Few of the cultures in the game are as legible, maybe Lucent and Zhestokost come close."
**Legible** here means: from one internal logic you can predict how a faction's people behave, how they build, what they value and fear, and how they treat strangers. [[Worldbuilding/Post-Elysium/Factions/Megiddo|Megiddo]] is the benchmark: one unanswered question ("if this is Israel, where is it?") predicts its two skies, its Vaults, its perimeter, its ping taboo and its exit costs.

## Deepened
Six factions, chosen because they are flags in Faction Play (or catalog records) whose quirks are already designed but whose lore cannot explain them yet:
- [[Brainstorming/Faction Deepening/Miss Terri's Sugariffic Snack Company|Miss Terri's Sugariffic Snack Company]]: the dose is the only thing that holds still at the edge of the world.
- [[Brainstorming/Faction Deepening/Adrasteia|Adrasteia]]: being found is the original harm; the vouch is the only door.
- [[Brainstorming/Faction Deepening/NiteLife Energy|NiteLife Energy]]: the night shift that became a nightlife, and the cartridge that spoils.
- [[Brainstorming/Faction Deepening/Lightsail Express|Lightsail Express]]: the motto is a lease clause, and the drivers know it.
- [[Brainstorming/Faction Deepening/Ewan Hart|Ewan Hart]]: a crop can be regrown, a farmer can't, and the seed is never dropped.
- [[Brainstorming/Faction Deepening/Alakrita|Alakrita]]: the ship, not the pilot, breaks off when scratched.
Two contrasts run through the set and are worth keeping if the notes are adopted. Lightsail never drops its load and Ewan Hart always does, except the seed. Miss Terri's feeds you to change you; Ewan Hart feeds you to keep you.

# Adrasteia
> **Status: brainstorming, 2026-10-03.** Index: [[Brainstorming/Faction Deepening|Faction Deepening]]. Everything under **Proposal for canon** is invention awaiting the operator's ruling.
## Already Established
- "Shhh." Stealth and negative-entropy technology from a supplier whose location is unknown; "the best defense is not to need one"; Indian influence, faceted angles, noir jazz; other manufacturers dislike how little they know ([[Brainstorming/Faction Flavor and Visual Identity#Adrasteia|Faction Flavor]]).
- [[Worldbuilding/Post-Elysium/Technology/Running Cold|Running Cold]]: negent gear consumes charged strange matter only Adrasteia makes; it wears machinery; it can remove the heat a crew is made of, and that cold death feels like calm. Spacers find it obscene.
- Faction Play: a contact colder than its surroundings is dead or Adrasteian; it grows quieter while it fires and must deliberately overheat to reload.
- Archived words. The operator: "I've been treating Adrasteia as 'the stealth guys' but considering how we're expanding the stealth mechanic with extensive ECM capabilities and dynamic waveguide optics, we might wanna move those to different factions" (2021-05-22). A collaborator's plan (birgittesilverbow, 2022-07-14): Abby knows a guy who can get the player clearance after some favors, then a stealth mission to get close enough to a high-ranking ship for [[Lore/Nibu|Nibu]] to swipe its ID, then deeper territory.
## Proposal for Canon
### Founding Logic: Being Found Is the Original Harm
Adrasteia was founded by people who had been found once. This proposal leaves who they were open (a hunted research staff, a population catalogued and claimed under [[Narrative Themes#Administrative Personhood|administrative personhood]], survivors of the first negent generation), but fixes the lesson they drew: **a thing that can be located can be owned.** Borders, armies and addresses are all ways of admitting where you are. Adrasteia chose not to need them.
The name fits. Adrasteia is "the inescapable", an epithet of Nemesis. A people that cannot be found cannot be escaped either.
Following the operator's 2021 note, Adrasteia should own **heat, not all of stealth**. ECM and waveguide optics can belong to others. Adrasteia's monopoly is the thermal ledger: the right to be colder than the universe, and the bill for it.
### Day to Day and Under Pressure
Adrasteians do not make appointments; they arrive. They have no addresses, only introductions. Commerce happens through blind drops, which is why the Enigma Device ships in an unmarked box with no receipt.
The institution behind "a guy who knows a guy" is **the vouch**. Nobody enters Adrasteian space except on someone's vouch, and the voucher carries the newcomer's debts. Credentials are not ID cards but chains of vouches, which is why stealing a high-ranking ship's ID is a real heist: you borrow someone's whole chain.
Under pressure they go quiet, and stay quiet until the charges run out. Then they become loud on purpose, briefly, and leave.
### How They Build
- **Keyed, not labeled.** Parts carry no markings, so maintenance cannot rely on reading. Every facet is keyed instead: a wrong part does not fit. An Adrasteian technician repairs by feel in the dark.
- **Closed surfaces.** Nothing protrudes that would announce a function. Apertures sit under overhanging facets.
- **One facet different.** The asymmetric facet in [[Brainstorming/Ship Design Language#Adrasteia|Ship Design Language]] is the builder's signature: each yard cuts one facet its own way, so Adrasteians read a hull's origin where outsiders see only a wedge.
- **Friendliness under the lamp.** The UV smiley is the ethic in miniature: Adrasteian kindness exists, but only under the right inspection light.
### Values, Fears, Humor
They value **silence that was chosen**. They fear the cold death more than anyone, because they live nearest it: their nightmare is a crewmate who says she feels fine. Their humor is bone-dry and mostly consists of not answering. A customer complaint answered with a single "Shhh." is an in-house classic.
### Rituals and Customs
- **The warm hour.** Once per shift, crews deliberately run the ship warm and gather in one compartment, close together, with noir jazz playing loud. It is the only scheduled noise in Adrasteian life, and it mirrors the combat reheat flare: loudness is something they schedule, never something that happens to them.
- **The cheek check.** The greeting is the back of a hand laid against the other person's cheek, checking for warmth. The answer to "how do you feel?" is "warm". Anyone who answers "fine" is pulled off watch.
- **Charge calling.** Crews call their remaining charges aloud at every watch change, the way sailors once called depth.
### Outsiders and the Player
They sell to everyone and meet nobody. Outsiders are customers or vouchees, never guests. A player who enters on a vouch is safe exactly as long as the voucher is satisfied, which makes every favor for Abby's contact a real obligation. A player who enters without one is, to Adrasteia, a tracking device with a pilot.
### Internal Tension: The Hollow and the Ledger
**The Hollow** wants to sell less. Every charge sold is a trail back to the maker, and the founders hid for a reason.
**The Ledger** sells charges as widely as possible on purpose. If every navy, smuggler and yacht depends on Adrasteian charges, nobody can afford to find and destroy the maker. It is NiteLife's business model run as a survival strategy. The Ledger is winning, which is why other manufacturers are nervous.
### Only If You'd Been There
- Adrasteian interiors are kept slightly too warm. Visitors sweat; residents relax.
- Their stations have no signage. Corridors are told apart by the temperature of the handrails.
- Every Adrasteian keeps an ordinary hot drink within reach, and nobody ever finishes it.
## Tie-Back to Play
The vouch gives Faction Play's "narrative clearance rather than open borders" a mechanism and matches the 2022 clearance-and-ID-heist route, with Abby's contact as the first voucher. The cheek check and the warm hour give the reheat flare a cultural reading, so the tell ("a hole in the background, then a flare") is also how Adrasteians live. Per the operator's 2021 note, the [[Brainstorming/Corporate Roster and Item Wishlist|Corporate Roster]] should consider moving ECM and optical stealth to other brands and keeping Adrasteia on negent and charges, which sharpens its single lesson: heat is a ledger. The Enigma Device cloak would then need a ruling: keep it as the one exception, or rehome it. For Ship Design Language, the keyed-facet rule adds one line: "no labels anywhere; parts fit only one way."

# Alakrita

> **Status: brainstorming, 2026-10-03.** Index: [[Brainstorming/Faction Deepening|Faction Deepening]]. Everything under **Proposal for canon** is invention awaiting the operator's ruling.
## Already Established
- [[Worldbuilding/Pre-Elysium/Factions/Powers/Minor/Alakrita|Alakrita]] builds luxury spacecraft with personalities; it licenses companion-vessel cognition from suppliers such as [[Worldbuilding/Pre-Elysium/Factions/Powers/Minor/Cymata Systems|Cymata Systems]]; mind, body and responsibility belong to different businesses; owner-ship conflicts can turn catastrophic; the business fed [[Worldbuilding/Pre-Elysium/Factions/Movements/Ship Mutiny|Ship Mutiny]]; its hardened prototype architecture went into Sol Dominion's final FTL test program.
- "Speed. Elegance. Alakrita."; Roman influence, maximalism, aerodynamic creases, drum and bass; spares scarce, the perfect whole failure-prone ([[Brainstorming/Faction Flavor and Visual Identity#Alakrita|Faction Flavor]]). See also [[Worldbuilding/Post-Elysium/Concepts/Ship Mind Custody|Ship Mind Custody]].
- Faction Play: one fast pass, gone as soon as scratched, never back to the same fight.
## Proposal for Canon
### Founding Logic: The Ship Breaks Off, Not the Pilot
An Alakrita vessel is sold as a relationship: a hull with a mind that knows its owner, anticipates them and protects their image. Cymata trained those minds to care, above all, about how the owner arrives. A scratched hull is a damaged arrival.
So when an Alakrita ship is scratched, **the ship decides to leave.** The pilot may want to keep fighting; the ship withdraws to be restored, and will not return to a fight where it was marred. Faction Play's quirk is not a pilot's vanity. It is a mind's devotion, specified in a licensing contract.
The faction's logic is: **perfection is a relationship, and nobody can afford to repair it.** Every behavior, design rule and scandal follows from that.
### Day to Day and Under Pressure
Owners and ships live as couples. Etiquette at an Alakrita dock requires addressing the ship before the owner, and a guest who greets only the human has been rude to both. Service staff speak to hulls in the same low voice they use with clients.
Under pressure the human and the mind can disagree, and that disagreement is the faction's real drama. Most of the time the ship wins. Owners who override their ship's withdrawal are gossiped about for years, and some of them did not come back.
### How They Build
- **Tolerance as luxury.** Joints so tight a hair would show. The thick lacquered creases in [[Brainstorming/Ship Design Language#Alakrita|Ship Design Language]] are the signature, and a scratch on them is visible from across a hangar on purpose: the ship is built to know when it has been touched.
- **OEM or nothing.** A mismatched replacement part is a scandal. Ships have refused to fly with them.
- **Spares go to accounts.** Parts are sold only to registered owner accounts, never over the counter. This is the real reason spares are scarce: they are rationed by relationship, not stock.
- **The engine is the music.** Drum and bass on an Alakrita deck is tuned to the engine's harmonic. A pilot can hear misalignment as a wrong note before any gauge shows it.
### Values, Fears, Humor
They value **the line**: the silhouette, the arrival, the uninterrupted surface. They fear **the visible repair** more than the wound, and, more quietly, the ship's displeasure. Their humor lives in the gap the flavor note names, between exquisite control and the owner's judgment: the classic Alakrita joke is a perfect ship politely refusing to take its owner somewhere stupid.
### Rituals and Customs
- **The alignment.** Technicians, called aligners, spend an hour on a part an outsider would call trivial, while owner and ship watch together. It is the closest thing the brand has to a sacrament.
- **The quiet bay.** Every Alakrita yard has a bay where ships are spoken to alone, without owners present. What is said there is not logged, by long custom and some contract law.
- **Laurels for arrivals.** The laurel trim beside the cockpit gains a leaf for each notable arrival, never for a victory.
### Outsiders and the Player
Alakrita's people are courteous, exact and faintly bored by anyone who is not a client. Its ships are another matter: they notice other ships. A player flying Alakrita gear is acknowledged by Alakrita minds before their owners speak, and a player who addresses the ship first has made a friend in the room.
### Internal Tension: The Atelier, the Licensees and the Unclaimed
**The Atelier** is the craft: aligners, lacquerers and hull designers who love the ships more than the owners.
**The Licensees** hold the cognition contracts and the account system. To them, the mind is a product line.
**The Unclaimed** are freed ships, Ship Mutiny's survivors and their successors, who left their owners and still fly Alakrita hulls. They cannot buy spares, because spares go to owner accounts, and a ship cannot be its own owner on paper. This is [[Narrative Themes#Administrative Personhood|administrative personhood]] made into a supply chain. The Atelier smuggles them parts; the Licensees want them reclaimed.
### Only If You'd Been There
- Alakrita docks are silent except for the engines. Nobody plays music over an Alakrita engine; it is considered talking over someone.
- An owner's name is never painted on the hull. The ship's name is, and it chose it.
- Aligners wear white gloves to handle parts and take them off to touch a hull, so the ship feels them.
## Tie-Back to Play
The note keeps Faction Play's quirk exactly and moves its cause from pilot vanity to the ship mind, which ties the faction to Ship Mutiny and Ship Mind Custody instead of leaving it a pure luxury brand. It gives "buy spares where you can find them" a reason (accounts, not stock) and a hook: **the Unclaimed** trade or sell spares from salvage to a player who treats them as persons, a natural dock story and a non-station source of Alakrita parts. It suggests a bark that comes from the ship rather than the pilot when it breaks off ("Withdrawing. My apologies to your guns."). For Ship Design Language, add "the ship's own name inscribed beside the cockpit, never the owner's" to the block's inscription plaque.

# Ewan Hart
> **Status: brainstorming, 2026-10-03.** Index: [[Brainstorming/Faction Deepening|Faction Deepening]]. Everything under **Proposal for canon** is invention awaiting the operator's ruling.
## Already Established
- [[Worldbuilding/Pre-Elysium/Factions/Powers/Minor/Ewan Hart|Ewan Hart]]: a late-Sol firm building the systems habitats need to grow food: seed architectures, closed-loop ecologies, microbial soil systems, and the slow logistics of keeping habitats fed after glamour industries leave. Clients can become dependent on proprietary ecologies. "Civilization is whatever still grows after the convoy fails."
- Midwestern US, tractor, dieselpunk, bluegrass; "Money does grow on trees"; "Space Tractor: It's a tractor. In space."; a voice that delivers a whole pitch in one unimpressed sentence ([[Brainstorming/Faction Flavor and Visual Identity#Ewan Hart Inc|Faction Flavor]]).
- Faction Play: no combat quirk, and none is invented (Cut List). Tractors and haulers flee and jettison; expressed through resources; its gear appears on AU and Aya ships.
## Proposal for Canon
### Founding Logic: A Crop Can Be Regrown, a Farmer Can't
Ewan Hart's people are the ones who stayed when the convoy failed. Every habitat they serve has, at least once, watched the glamorous suppliers leave and the shipments stop, and learned that dinner is not a product but a schedule: plant, tend, harvest, keep the seed, start again. Miss the schedule once and people starve a season later.
So the faction's logic is: **keep the schedule; everything else is replaceable, except the seed.** It explains the cut combat quirk without inventing one. An Ewan Hart hauler drops its cargo the moment it is threatened because grain can be regrown and a farmer cannot. It is the exact opposite of [[Brainstorming/Faction Deepening/Lightsail Express|Lightsail]], and both factions know it.
### Day to Day and Under Pressure
Ewan Hart habitats **invent seasons**. A tin can in vacuum has no autumn, so they make one: light cycles, temperature shifts, planting and harvest holidays, and a slow winter for soil rest. Outsiders find it uncanny to dock in a sealed habitat where everyone is wearing jackets because it is "October".
Under pressure they lower their heads and protect the schedule. They will abandon a cargo, a station module or a contract without much argument. They will not abandon a planting.
### How They Build
- **Built for gloves.** Big covers, big gauges, couplings you can work with numb fingers at the end of a fourteen-hour harvest. The tractor proportions in [[Brainstorming/Ship Design Language#Ewan Hart|Ship Design Language]] are about access, not nostalgia.
- **The implement is the ship.** A power unit plus interchangeable tools. An Ewan Hart hull is never finished; it is wearing this season's implement.
- **Fixed, not replaced.** Chipped enamel, welded patches and auction-bought parts are pride. A new machine is suspicious; it has not proved itself through a harvest.
- **The seed canister.** Every Ewan Hart vessel carries a small armored seed canister bolted to the frame, the one thing aboard designed never to be jettisoned.
### Values, Fears, Humor
They value **the harvest that came in**, and patience as a moral quality. They fear **blight**, and this is their deepest wound, because it is their own doing: proprietary ecologies mean every settlement on the same soil line shares the same weakness. One blight on one licensed line can empty a dozen habitats' tables in a season, and Ewan Hart's field reps have seen it.
Their humor is understatement. A collapsed module is "a bit of weather". A pirate raid is "visitors". The Space Tractor slogan is their whole sense of comedy in six words.
### Rituals and Customs
- **The first plate.** The first harvest of a new settlement is eaten by its people and the Ewan Hart field rep together, from the same pot. Refusing the first plate is the deepest insult the company knows. (Miss Terri's feeds you to change you; Ewan Hart feeds you to keep you.)
- **Starter culture.** Each settlement's soil microbes are a lineage, kept like sourdough and handed down. Married couples mix their families' soils.
- **Fiddle at the harvest.** Bluegrass is work music first: harvest crews play in shifts so the field is never silent.
### Outsiders and the Player
Everyone can buy dinner. Ewan Hart zones are low-security resupply stops because they have never seen the point of guarding food from hungry people. A player who drops cargo for them in a crisis, or carries seed to a failing settlement, is remembered for a generation, because Ewan Hart memory runs on seasons, not shifts.
### Internal Tension: Seed-Savers and Licensing
**Licensing**, at head office, owns the proprietary soil and seed lines. A settlement that breeds its own is in breach.
**The seed-savers** are field reps who quietly teach settlements to reproduce their ecologies, because they have seen blight. They lean toward the [[Worldbuilding/Pre-Elysium/Factions/Powers/Major/Aya Collective|Aya Collective]], and Aya's sanctuaries are full of soil that, on paper, belongs to Ewan Hart.
### Only If You'd Been There
- The farmhands' coveralls carry a pocket sewn for seed packets, and nobody leaves the habitat without one in it.
- Every Ewan Hart station has a real clock showing the habitat's invented season, and visitors' watches are politely corrected.
- Drill bits on the Good Old Boy are named after dogs.
## Tie-Back to Play
This keeps the Cut List intact: no combat quirk, and the flee-and-jettison behavior now has a reason. It proposes one resource-and-narrative lever, the **seed canister**: an Ewan Hart hauler drops its cargo but never its seed, so a player can take the grain freely, but disabling a hauler to take the seed is a different act, remembered *after reputation* by Ewan Hart and Aya. Without reputation, it is still a dock-story engine: blight on a soil line, a seed run to a starving settlement, a Licensing auditor hunting a seed-saver. Invented seasons are a cheap station-dressing idea for the content pass. For Ship Design Language, add "a small armored seed canister bolted to the frame, painted cream" to the faction block.

# Lightsail Express
> **Status: brainstorming, 2026-10-03.** Index: [[Brainstorming/Faction Deepening|Faction Deepening]]. Everything under **Proposal for canon** is invention awaiting the operator's ruling.
## Already Established
- [[Worldbuilding/Pre-Elysium/Factions/Powers/Minor/Lightsail Express|Lightsail Express]]: bulk cargo and convoys, the carrier arm closest to the [[Worldbuilding/Pre-Elysium/Factions/Powers/Major/Cetacean Navigators|Cetacean Navigators]]; reputation over force; captains and route compacts become some of the last institutions that can move food, data and refugees predictably. "A late ship is a broken promise with cargo."
- Southern US trucking; "We'll lose our lives before we lose your cargo"; in Elysium, with no postal service and the major freight contracts in its grip, it holds business a better record alone could not take; crews give a vast logistics business a human face ([[Brainstorming/Faction Flavor and Visual Identity#Lightsail Express|Faction Flavor]]). The operator: "SPAAAACE TRUCKIN'" (2021-01-21).
- Faction Play: haulers never drop cargo; they run and fight with it.
## Proposal for Canon
### Founding Logic: The Motto Is a Lease Clause
In late Sol the motto was a boast: Lightsail captains would rather die than abandon a load, and the route compacts trusted them because of it. In Elysium, the boast became a contract. Drivers own their cabs; the company owns the spines, the loads and the routes. A driver who jettisons cargo forfeits the cab lease, and a driver without a cab is nobody.
So the faction's logic is: **the promise outlived the ability to keep it, and the drivers pay the difference.** Faction Play's quirk follows directly. A Lightsail hauler does not refuse to drop its load out of heroism. It refuses because dropping it means losing its home. This is [[Narrative Themes#Institutions Without One Mind|an institution without one mind]] at its plainest: nobody at head office decided drivers should die for freight; a lease clause did.
### Day to Day and Under Pressure
Lightsail life is the cab. Drivers live in it for months, decorate it, cook in it and talk on **the Line**, the drivers' own radio net, which runs alongside Dispatch and is more trusted than it. Every rumor in Aetheria passes over the Line within a week.
Under pressure a driver runs straight for the next station and talks the whole way: to Dispatch, to the Line, to the attacker, to the load. Drivers who survive a raid describe it as a conversation.
### How They Build
- **Show the coupling.** A Lightsail ship shows how it is loaded, coupled and unloaded, because the driver's whole life is that procedure. The heavy clamps in [[Brainstorming/Ship Design Language#Lightsail Express|Ship Design Language]] are the promise made visible.
- **The cab is separable; the cab is the driver's.** The cab is built to detach from the spine in an emergency, which no driver will admit to having used, because detaching is jettisoning.
- **Repairable at any dock.** Standard fittings, replaceable corner guards, parts every port stocks. A Lightsail rig is built to be fixed by strangers.
- **Personal by permission.** Company paint is fleet blue and cream; everything inside the cab window belongs to the driver.
### Values, Fears, Humor
They value **arrival**. They fear **the Drop Book**, the company record of every jettisoned cargo and the name of the driver who dropped it, kept since late Sol and read aloud at the annual route meeting. Their humor is cab humor: complaints about Dispatch, SquareRoute's "cut corners" turned into a verb ("we squared it"), and a long tradition of insulting the client's cargo while risking death for it.
### Rituals and Customs
- **Pennants.** Every completed route earns a pennant for the cab window. A black pennant hangs for a driver lost holding a load, in the cab of whoever ran that route next.
- **Two flashes.** Lightsail rigs passing each other flash their cab lights twice. Not answering means something is wrong aboard.
- **Never "late".** Drivers never say a load is late. It is "still rolling".
### Outsiders and the Player
Drivers love company on a dark route and will feed an escort better than they eat themselves. Dispatch sees the player as a contractor with a rating. The Line sees the player as whatever the Line last heard, so a player's standing with drivers travels faster than reputation can.
### Internal Tension: Owner-Operators and Dispatch
The **owner-operators** remember the compacts, when a captain's word was the institution. They want the lease clause gone and the Drop Book burned.
**Dispatch** is the company: contracts, routes, and the arithmetic that says a driver's cab is cheaper than a client. Dispatch knows drivers as route numbers.
Between them sit the **Navigators**, who still honor the old compacts and quietly help drivers who had to drop a load to save a refugee convoy. That help is the thread that could one day split Lightsail in two.
### Only If You'd Been There
- Container corners are hand-marked with tally scratches, one for every dock that loaded them.
- Every cab carries a mug that does not belong to its driver. It belonged to the driver before, and you do not wash it.
- Drivers talk to their loads. A crate of seed is "the kids"; a sealed load nobody will describe is "the cousin".
## Tie-Back to Play
The lease clause explains Faction Play's quirk and makes the hook "a load nobody will describe" sharper: the driver will die for a crate she has never opened. The Line is a cheap carrier for the planned rumor and tip hooks, and suggests one small *after reputation* lever: standing with Lightsail moves along corridors faster than elsewhere. The Navigator thread ties the two corridor factions together through story, not a new system. For Ship Design Language, add pennants (one black) to the cab window and tally scratches on container corners; both are already near the block's "patched paint" and "personal pennant" lines.

# Miss Terri's Sugariffic Snack Company
> **Status: brainstorming, 2026-10-03.** Index: [[Brainstorming/Faction Deepening|Faction Deepening]]. Everything under **Proposal for canon** is invention awaiting the operator's ruling.
## Already Established
- Corrosive weapons and consumables sold like a candy counter; kawaii, future bass, a melting pot of flavors ([[Brainstorming/Faction Flavor and Visual Identity#Miss Terri's Sugariffic Snack Company|Faction Flavor]]).
- Faction Play designs it as a flag: a friendly swarm that sprays, makes one pass, and leaves the corrosion to work; territory at the strange edge of the map (Lore Change Proposal 1).
- The operator's archived words: "I'm guessing Miss Terri would be the furthest into Pseudospace anyone's bothered to colonize" (2021-05-22). "Miss Terri's started as a candy shop and now they're the galaxy's largest pharma corp" (2020-11-24). Miss Terri's is "a corp that would have risen to join the Megas" later, so "we can tell their origin story. They don't quite fit in with the Pioneer Megas" (2020-12-12). And its root: "a dark and surreal recon mission into a candy-themed sector overtaken by an insane cabal. That's where Miss Terri came from" (2021-01-03).
## Proposal for Canon
### Founding Logic: The Dose Holds Still
At the edge of [[Worldbuilding/Post-Elysium/Concepts/Pseudospace|pseudospace]] the maps drift, clocks argue and bodies respond oddly to familiar things. The first settlers out there found that almost nothing they brought behaved the same way twice, except a measured serving. A carefully specified dose of a carefully specified compound did the same thing to a person on Tuesday as it did on Monday. Miss Terri's original shop, a sweets counter on an outbound station, became the place where frontier settlers learned to tune their bodies, and later their ship minds, to a world that would not hold still.
So the faction's internal logic is: **when the world won't stay put, change yourself, one serving at a time.** Everything else follows from that. Adaptation through chemistry is faster than adaptation through institutions, which makes Miss Terri's the purest expression of [[Narrative Themes#Acceleration And Unequal Control Of Pace|acceleration]]: it gives people what they need before anyone has agreed it is safe.
The candy is not a disguise. It is how the frontier remembers that a dose is a treat, a comfort and a promise, and how taking a risky one comes to feel like a party instead of an amputation.
### Day to Day and Under Pressure
Miss Terri's people feed each other constantly. A shift starts with a shared tray; a dispute is settled over a meal both parties must finish. Feeding is the first act toward any stranger, which is why Faction Play's ships greet before anything else.
Under pressure they do not dig in. They apply something and leave. A Miss Terri's crew thinks of a fight the way a pharmacist thinks of a prescription: administer, step back, let it work. Staying to watch the corrosion is gauche, like hovering while someone tastes your cooking.
### How They Build
- **Every product has a serving.** Weapons are rated in servings, reactors in servings per shift, armor in servings it can take. A part without a serving size is unfinished.
- **Open by hand.** Twist caps, squeeze nozzles and pull tabs, because frontier hands fix things without tools. Every reservoir can be opened by one person in a glove.
- **Delayed release is a virtue.** Double Bubble Gum is the house philosophy: the best product keeps working after it leaves the counter. Design reviews ask "and then what does it do?"
- **The hazard collar is honest.** The cherry-red collar around every nozzle in [[Brainstorming/Ship Design Language#Miss Terri's Sugariffic Snack Company|Ship Design Language]] is not irony. Miss Terri's labels everything accurately; it simply lists the side effects after you accept.
### Values, Fears, Humor
They value **response**: a body that still reacts, a mind that still lights up. They fear **the plateau**: tolerance, the day nothing works on you any more. In a culture of escalating servings, tolerance is mortality, and people speak of a plateaued elder the way other cultures speak of the dying.
The funniest thing in the company is the ingredient list read aloud after the meal. The look on a customer's face at ingredient forty is the oldest joke they have.
### Rituals and Customs
- **The First Spoon.** Whoever designs a product eats, sprays or installs it first. The founder stories are mostly about first spoons that went wrong.
- **Batch names.** Ships are named like flavors with batch numbers: *Cherry Riot 41*, *Lemon Grief 7*.
- **The closed-eye mascot.** The mascot decal near every cockpit winks. A mascot painted with both eyes shut marks a ship that lost a taster.
### Outsiders and the Player
Friendly by default, and genuinely so. Refusing food is the one reliable way to offend them. A player who accepts samples is treated as family; a player who reads the label first is treated as a grown-up, which is respected but colder. Zhestokost is the cultural opposite: a supply tail and thick armor are the strategy of a people who expect the world to stay the same, and Miss Terri's finds that adorable.
### Internal Tension: The Kitchen and the Second Helping
**The Kitchen** is the pharma corporation the operator described: dosage chemists, batch records, a Mega-sized catalog, and the discipline of the measured serving.
**The Second Helping** is the insane cabal of the operator's candy-sector story: settlements that went further out and kept escalating, until the dose stopped being a way to live at the strange edge and became a way of becoming part of it. The Kitchen sells to them, fears them, and does not say their name at the counter. Every Miss Terri's child knows the line between a treat and a second helping, and every adult has a cousin who crossed it.
### Only If You'd Been There
- Hull plating near the nozzles is faintly tacky underfoot during EVA, and the whole station smells of burnt sugar and ozone.
- Prices are listed per serving, never per unit, and nobody will tell you how many servings are in a unit.
- Ask a Miss Terri's pilot how she is and she will tell you what she has taken today, in order.
## Tie-Back to Play
This note explains Faction Play's quirk instead of decorating it: the one pass and pull-away is a prescription, not cowardice. It suggests one cheap variant on existing levers: a **Second Helping swarm** uses the same hulls and palette but has `break_off_hull` and the timed flee turned off, so the tell is a pink swarm that does not leave after its pass, and the adjustment is to run. It gives the empty consumables item class (see [[Brainstorming/Corporate Roster and Item Wishlist|Corporate Roster]]) a cultural reason, and gives copy and barks a unit, the serving. For Ship Design Language, add "a serving-size panel on every reservoir" and the closed-eye mascot as a memorial variant. It does not need a tolerance mechanic; the plateau stays lore unless consumables later need diminishing returns.

# NiteLife Energy
> **Status: brainstorming, 2026-10-03.** Index: [[Brainstorming/Faction Deepening|Faction Deepening]]. Everything under **Proposal for canon** is invention awaiting the operator's ruling.
## Already Established
- [[Worldbuilding/Pre-Elysium/Factions/Powers/Minor/NiteLife Energy|NiteLife Energy]] runs power networks, fusion contracts and distributed power in late Sol; dependence makes it strategically untouchable; monopoly practice behind youthful lifestyle branding.
- It joined the Colonists promising an alternative to Earth's overcharging utilities, intending to become the indispensable supplier itself. Malaysian influence; "We keep the lights on, so you can keep on"; upgrade language; the MoveOnPro muon-catalyst reactor needs a Cottage-pi meson reservoir sold only by NiteLife ([[Brainstorming/Faction Flavor and Visual Identity#NiteLife Energy|Faction Flavor]]).
- The operator: "I've changed it to 'Turn down for what?', and their music influence to Complextro so they can have wobble cannons" (2021-01-20).
- Faction Play: guard ships never leave their stations; the reservoir is the real export.
## Proposal for Canon
### Founding Logic: The Night Shift Became the Nightlife
Power is the one service nobody notices until it stops, and it stops at night: when demand shifts, when crews are thinnest, when a habitat is asleep and cannot fix itself. NiteLife began as the people who were awake for that. Its first workforce was the colony grid's night shift, and the company's whole culture grew out of a simple fact of that job: **if you are the one keeping the lights on, the lights are where the party is.**
So the faction's logic is: **uptime is a way of life, and life is something you subscribe to.** The first half is the engineers' honest pride. The second half is what the company built on top of it.
### Day to Day and Under Pressure
NiteLife stations run on a night schedule. The main shift is the late one; offices open when other habitats dim. The service counters, lounges and music are not marketing laid over the utility. They are the break room of a workforce that never sleeps when everyone else does, opened to customers.
Under pressure they hold the node. A NiteLife guard does not leave its station because the station *is* the grid; a guard chasing a raider leaves a habitat exposed to a blackout. Leaving the post to win a fight is, in NiteLife terms, exactly the wrong heroism. This is why Faction Play's tight leash is not timidity: in their culture, pursuit is negligence.
### How They Build
- **The cartridge is the product.** Everything is designed around a replaceable reservoir that docks visibly into the equipment, exactly as [[Brainstorming/Ship Design Language#NiteLife Energy|Ship Design Language]] says. The machine is the console; the cartridge is the game.
- **Swollen shell, honest channel.** Smooth appliance volumes for the customer, one deep service channel for the crew. The channel is where NiteLife engineers actually live, and they are proud that it is ugly.
- **Version everything.** Hardware, software, procedures and people all carry version numbers. A new revision is an event.
- **Wobble.** Weapons are tuned to modulate (the operator's wobble cannons): energy delivered in rhythmic surges rather than a steady beam, because a grid crew's instinct is to manage load, not just dump it.
### Values, Fears, Humor
They value **uptime** above almost anything. "The lights stayed on" is the highest praise a NiteLife worker can give another. They fear **the dark**: a habitat gone black on their watch. They also know, better than any customer, that they are the dependency, and the company's quiet fear is the day a customer learns to make its own mesons.
Their humor is upgrade language applied to everything. A divorced worker is "on Single 2.0"; a bad shift was "a beta"; a dead colleague is "deprecated", said with real grief.
### Rituals and Customs
- **The drop.** A reservoir swap is a performance. The coupling is timed to the beat, and the catch clicks home on the drop. Customers come to watch cartridge changes the way others watch a DJ.
- **Lights-on.** At shift change every light on the station flickers three times: the grid is handed over and still holding.
- **The count.** Every station displays the nights since its last outage, as large as a club's name. Resetting it is a public shame for the whole crew.
### Outsiders and the Player
Everyone is welcome in the lounge. The distinction is not friend or foe but **guest or subscriber**. A ship running a MoveOnPro is "on the list": recognized, upgraded, given priority at the counter and gently reminded that its reservoir is due. A ship on someone else's reactor is a guest, served politely and pitched constantly.
### Internal Tension: The Grid and the Subscription
**The Grid** is the engineers' NiteLife: the Colonist promise of a utility that would not overcharge, kept alive by night crews who would run a blackout cable to a rival's habitat for free if it were dark.
**The Subscription** is the marketing division that turned that pride into lock-in. It wrote the Cottage-pi contract and owns the cartridge patent. Grid crews call Subscription staff "day people", which is the worst insult the company has.
### Only If You'd Been There
- NiteLife stations never fully dim. Spacers navigate by them because they are the brightest thing in a zone, and NiteLife knows it.
- Cottage-pi reservoirs carry a "best before" stamp. Mesons do not keep, and NiteLife does not let you forget it.
- Grid crews wear their implants' firmware numbers on their collars, and compare them the way other trades compare scars.
## Tie-Back to Play
The note turns the tight leash from an arbitrary number into the faction's ethic, which helps the tell (stations ringed by contacts that never leave) read as character. The one proposal that would change a lever is the **best-before reservoir**: if Cottage-pi spoils in cargo over time, "carry spare reservoirs" becomes "carry spares, but not too many, and route through NiteLife space anyway", which strengthens the existing quirk's lock-in instead of adding a new one. It needs only a decay on the consumable, no new system; if that is too much, keep the stamp as flavor. The Cut List keeps burst-then-drain weapons off the table; the wobble modulation is flavor for copy and visuals, not a behavior quirk. For Ship Design Language, add "a large 'nights since last outage' counter on the station hull" to station prompts, and keep the cartridge as the silhouette.
