# Magic and Miracles
Magic in Kalsa is an argument with what happens next.
Magic in Kalsa can help people understand how something will move, influence a harvest months away, warn of danger at a boundary, or change the course of a storm. The people who practise and record it disagree about what makes it reliable. Their accounts describe both extraordinary results and work that failed.
Before a wall moves, someone shifts the brace. A Ju'onai reader may call the
sudden comprehension of its joined loads an opening.
A storm can divide around a city. Stone can give way along an old fault. A god may grant a champion so much favor that witnesses begin building a shrine before the smoke clears. One Jamnai record describes [[../Sources/The Faces in the Ash Halo|faces appearing in the light while iron raiment closes]] around a champion.
Months before a harvest, a Papsenai shaman may begin holding attention upon one
field. Seed is reserved, work changes, and weather and chance are pressed toward
a season the household can reach. Prophets work amid futures altered by their
own announcement. Along guarded Sarxe routes, listeners feel pressure cross a
boundary in time to turn a patrol or danger aside.
Such accounts do not supply a single set of common rules. Failures offer some of the clearest limits: a storm shaman has nothing to divide in an empty sky, and a reader cannot find a yielding joint in an unloaded wall. Practical preparations also matter. Delving compacts fund the crew and its recovery before inspiration begins. Workings at other sites have interfered with each other, while repeated miracles near old deaths have drawn answers nobody asked for. Courts, shrines, and mortuary keepers disagree about what these failures establish.
At larger scales a storm divides around a city or stone gives way along an old
fault. A god may pour enough favor through a champion that witnesses begin the
shrine before the smoke clears. One Jamnai record follows
[[../Sources/The Faces in the Ash Halo|faces appearing in the light while iron
raiment closes]].
## Working toward a harvest
The nearest thing Kalsa has to common rules is a trail of failed work. Empty sky
gives a storm shaman nothing to divide; an unloaded wall offers a reader no
yielding joint. Delving compacts fund the crew and its recovery before
inspiration begins. At other sites, workings have interfered with one another,
and repeated miracles near old death have drawn an answer nobody commissioned.
Courts, shrines, and mortuary keepers carry these failures into different
arguments.
A Papsenai shaman may begin attending to one field months before harvest. This work, called a field bond, involves the household's decisions as well as the shaman's attention.
## Work, schools, and testimony
Before the bond begins, the household names the seed and subsistence it will keep out of the work. The shaman directs the remaining labor and reserves toward a harvest the household can reach, pressing weather and chance toward that season. Seed is reserved and work changes as the effort proceeds. Later field records preserve the decisions to continue pursuing that future, release it, or abandon it.
Before a Papsenai field bond begins, the household names the seed and
subsistence it will withhold from the work. The shaman holds the remaining
labor and reserve toward a reachable harvest. Later field records keep the
decisions to continue, release, or abandon that future.
## Reading how things work
Ju'onai schools compare demonstrations of **openings**, moments when the joins
and hinges of a bounded system become suddenly plain. Concordance Temples,
Trial Boards, Four-Because Chairs, and Named-Edge Circles disagree over whether
a god, disciplined trial, precise causal speech, or honest boundaries make
that knowledge reliable. Houses of Attestation certify what a reader
demonstrated; a court may still reject the reader's proposed judgment. Client
colleges keep these disagreements alive through exercises such as
[[../Sources/Four Readings of a Broken Sluice|Four Readings of a Broken
Sluice]], where a keeper makes each school return to the failed gate and lower
fields.
Ju'onai readers experience **openings**: moments when they suddenly understand the joins and hinges of a particular, bounded system. In a loaded wall, an opening may reveal how its parts bear weight together. Someone shifts a brace before the wall moves; the reader's sudden understanding concerns those connected loads.
Sarxe route testimony grows around crossings rather than classrooms. A warning
travels with the listener, boundary, and patrol that acted upon it. Stories of a
shared Sarxe mind belong to outsiders; listeners describe flows between
distinct people and places.
Ju'onai schools disagree about why such knowledge can be trusted. Concordance Temples look to a god; Trial Boards to disciplined testing; Four-Because Chairs to precise speech about causes; and Named-Edge Circles to an honest account of where the reader's knowledge stops. They compare demonstrations of openings, but they do not share one explanation of them.
## Marks after the act
A House of Attestation certifies what a reader demonstrated. That certificate does not settle what should be done: a court may still reject the judgment the reader proposes. Client colleges examine this distinction through exercises such as [[../Sources/Four Readings of a Broken Sluice|Four Readings of a Broken Sluice]]. Its keeper repeatedly brings the schools' arguments back to the failed gate and the lower fields it was supposed to serve.
Ju'onai schools call certain local causal scars **aftermarks**. An aftermark can
send an inspector back to a shifted brace, a cracked seal, or a sequence of
movements. Naming an actor or intention requires other evidence even in the
strictest school accounts.
An opening may also leave evidence behind. Ju'onai schools call certain local traces of how events happened **aftermarks**. An inspector following one may return to a shifted brace, a cracked seal, or a sequence of movements. Even the strictest school accounts require other evidence before naming who acted or what they intended.
Prophetic houses face trouble before the act instead: announcing a forecast can
change the future it described. City courts therefore ask what a sponsor meant
to do after hearing it. The surviving files of [[../Sources/The Closed Lift Appeal|the Closed Lift Appeal]]
keep those intended interventions with the forecasts offered in court.
## Listening at boundaries
Along guarded Sarxe routes, listeners can feel pressure crossing a boundary soon enough to redirect a patrol or turn danger aside. Their testimony identifies the listener, the boundary, and the patrol that acted on the warning. Knowledge accumulates around these crossings rather than in classrooms.
Outsiders tell stories of a shared Sarxe mind. Listeners describe flows between distinct people and places.
## Forecasts change what follows
A Prophet's announcement can alter the future it describes. People who hear a forecast may act because of it, so courts need to know more than what was predicted.
City courts ask what a sponsor intended to do after hearing a forecast. The surviving files of [[../Sources/The Closed Lift Appeal|the Closed Lift Appeal]] preserve those intended interventions alongside the forecasts offered as evidence.
## When futures crowd
Divided City house comparers call a forecast's horizon **crowded** when people
inside it can act on the report or answer through another Gift. Their comparison
files keep the question, recipients, intended responses, operating changes,
and expiry on separate leaves. An unexplained gap stays a gap until a named
witness or material trace narrows it.
Divided City house comparers call the future covered by a forecast **crowded** when people within it can act on the report or respond through another Gift. To compare such forecasts, they keep separate leaves for the question asked, who received the answer, what those recipients intended to do, what changed in actual operations, and when the report expired. If the record leaves something unexplained, comparers retain the gap until a named witness or material trace narrows it.
The practice grew around disputes like
[[../Sources/The Three Orders at Sunwall|the Three Orders at Sunwall]]. Two patrons prepared incompatible armed
movements; the steward responsible for the loaded wall closed the machinery and
removed both openings. The houses now ask what a sponsor meant to do after
hearing a report. Sunwall records what its operators changed while the report
was live.
This practice developed around disputes such as [[../Sources/The Three Orders at Sunwall|the Three Orders at Sunwall]]. Two patrons prepared incompatible armed movements. The steward responsible for the loaded wall shut its machinery, removing both the planned counter-route and the opening the opposing champion meant to use. The houses now ask what each sponsor intended to do after receiving a report. Sunwall records what its operators changed while that report was still live.
The phrase also travels beyond Prophetic work. In
[[../Sources/The Narrow Shield|the Narrow Shield]], Papsenai targets and a Sarxe boundary began returning
pressure through one another until a single watch lead narrowed the defense.
Circle tenders describe that collision through signals and released targets,
not through a Prophet's missing vision.
“Crowded” also has uses outside Prophetic work. In [[../Sources/The Narrow Shield|the Narrow Shield]], Papsenai workers protecting their targets and a Sarxe boundary redirected pressure into one another. Their separate corrections kept changing what the other groups had to handle, until one watch lead narrowed the defense. Circle tenders explain this collision by tracing signals and the targets released from protection. Their account does not describe a gap in a Prophet's vision.

# The Narrow Shield
The Narrow Shield is an adopted Ti'asantatca storm history. This note owns its
factual sequence and immediate settlement.
[[Spoilers/Institutions/Stormshield Circles|Stormshield Circles]] owns the later
procedure. The exact date, city districts, tribes, Sarxe group, casualties, and
local names remain unresolved.
The Narrow Shield was a storm emergency in Ti'asantatca in which several groups protecting different places kept redirecting danger into one another's care. The active Stormshield Circle lead stopped the cycle by taking command for one watch and concentrating protection on the central city. The main barrier and city refuges survived; outer land and people bore the losses.
## The multiplying corrections
This is adopted history. This note owns the event's factual sequence and immediate settlement; [[Spoilers/Institutions/Stormshield Circles|Stormshield Circles]] owns the later procedure. The exact date, city districts, tribes, Sarxe group, casualties, and local names remain unresolved.
A gulf storm turned across several shield targets during the passage of a Sarxe
convoy and accompanying households. Outer Papsenai workers were holding
cultivated slopes and a road approach. Inner cohorts protected the main city and
its pressure refuges.
## How the protections collided
The Sarxe group raised a Channeler boundary after wind and active magical
pressure crossed its camp. The boundary turned the crossing away from the road.
The nearest shamanic target received the changed force and pressed it toward an
unoccupied drainage line. A second cohort felt that movement entering its city
section and strengthened its own hold.
A gulf storm changed direction across several places under magical protection while a Sarxe convoy and accompanying households were passing through. Outer Papsenai workers held cultivated slopes and a road approach. Inner cohorts protected the main city and its pressure refuges.
Each intervention protected the body its workers had accepted. Together they
returned pressure through the outer targets faster than the separate signals
could establish why the storm kept changing. Relief workers arrived with
instructions based on conditions that no longer existed. One outer cohort
refused to release while families and seed remained behind it. The Sarxe group
refused to drop a boundary while the redirected crossing would strike people
inside the camp.
When wind and active magical pressure crossed the Sarxe camp, the group raised a Channeler boundary. It redirected the crossing away from the road. That force reached the nearest shamanic target, whose workers pressed it toward an unoccupied drainage line. A second cohort felt the redirected pressure entering its city section and strengthened its hold.
## The narrowing order
Each group was competently protecting the people or place it had taken responsibility for. Their combined responses sent pressure back through the outer targets, prompting further corrections. The storm's behavior changed faster than their separate signals could explain why. Relief workers arrived carrying instructions for conditions that had already passed.
The active Circle lead declared one watch under a narrowing order. All shield
signals passed through the central station. Outer field and road bonds were
ordered released. Available cohorts, attendants, stores, and shelter access
were reassigned to the central city and its pressure refuges. The Sarxe
boundary was keyed to the Circle signal and barred from an independent change
until the watch ended.
Simply asking a group to stop did not remove the danger it faced. One outer cohort refused to release its protection while families and seed remained behind it. The Sarxe group refused to lower its boundary while the redirected crossing would strike people in the camp.
The lead did not see a complete future. The order worked by making one response
dominant. Once outer workers and the Channeler group could no longer answer each
new pressure independently, the central cohorts held a coherent target long
enough for the worst crossing to pass.
## One watch under central command
The city refuges and main barrier survived. Wind and water crossed the released
road and cultivated slopes. The Sarxe convoy lost its planned departure and
some separated people remained outside the central shelter claim. Papsenai
households lost fields, seed, dwellings, and stored work. Injuries and deaths
are preserved without an adopted number.
The active Circle lead issued a **narrowing order** lasting one watch. All shield signals now passed through the central station. Workers were ordered to release their bonds to the outer fields and road. Available cohorts, attendants, stores, and shelter access were reassigned to the central city and its pressure refuges. The Sarxe boundary was tied to the Circle signal, and its workers could make no independent change until the watch ended.
## Settlement
The lead did not know the complete future. The order worked because it made one coordinated response dominant: outer workers and the Channeler group could no longer react independently to every new pressure. That allowed the central cohorts to keep holding a consistent target long enough for the worst crossing to pass.
The narrowing authority expired after the named watch, but the lead's control
of stores, signal copies, and access records did not dissolve by itself. Outer
households and Sarxe witnesses required copies from tenders and relief workers
before they could establish what had been released and when.
The city refuges and main barrier survived. Wind and water crossed the road and cultivated slopes whose protection had been released. Papsenai households lost fields, seed, dwellings, and the results of work they had stored. The Sarxe convoy could not make its planned departure, and some people separated from it remained outside the central shelter claim. The history records injuries and deaths, but no number has been adopted.
The settlement retained narrowing orders for immediate recursive failure. A
valid order named:
## What the settlement required
- the watch and danger;
- signals admitted to the central account;
- targets ordered released or held;
- cohorts, stores, shelters, and boundaries placed under the lead;
- people and places expected to bear the transfer;
- the condition ending the authority; and
- custody of copies for later review.
The lead's narrowing authority ended with the named watch. Control of stores, signal copies, and access records did not automatically pass out of the lead's hands with it. To establish which protections had been released and when, outer households and Sarxe witnesses had to obtain copies from tenders and relief workers.
Later Circle leads cite the survival of the central refuges when demanding
earlier authority. Outer communities cite the same history when refusing to let
“central” mean the population whose losses are easiest to record. Sarxe route
practice remembers that accepting common command can prevent a shared disaster
and can also close the movement by which a household meant to survive it.
The settlement retained narrowing orders for emergencies in which protective responses were immediately driving further failures. A valid order had to name:
## Oracle-ecology consequence
- the watch and the danger;
- which signals would be included in the central account;
- which targets workers must release or hold;
- the cohorts, stores, shelters, and boundaries placed under the lead's control;
- the people and places expected to bear the redirected danger;
- the condition that would end the authority; and
- who would hold copies for later review.
No participant possessed a view outside the field. The independent
interventions were competent within their targets and catastrophic in
recursion. The narrowing order produced real safety by temporarily controlling
observation, material support, target assignment, and response. It foreclosed
outer futures and left its beneficiaries holding the records needed to judge
the cost.
Later Circle leads cite the survival of the central refuges when demanding earlier authority. Outer communities use the same history to challenge whom that authority protects: “central” must not come to mean the population whose losses are easiest to record.
Sarxe route practice remembers both consequences. Common command can prevent a shared disaster. It can also prevent a household from leaving along the route by which it intended to survive.
## What the event establishes about foresight
No participant could observe the whole situation from outside it. Each intervention made sense within the target its workers could perceive and influence. Together, those interventions created a disastrous cycle.
The narrowing order provided real safety by placing observation, supplies and other material support, target assignment, and responses under temporary central control. It also closed off the possibilities the outer workers had been trying to preserve. Those who benefited from the decision were left holding the records that others needed to judge its cost.
## Adventure consequences
Storm-damaged slopes may cover old Circle stations, convoy goods, boundary
markers, shelter lists, and signal copies. A present narrowing order can depend
on whether those records prove that an outer route was knowingly released or
simply lost. Recovering them can give displaced descendants and separated Sarxe
standing without proving that a different order would have saved everyone.
Storm-damaged slopes may cover old Circle stations, convoy goods, boundary markers, shelter lists, and signal copies. Those records could show whether an outer route was knowingly released or simply lost. A present narrowing order can depend on what they establish.

Recovering the evidence can give displaced descendants and separated Sarxe standing in the dispute. It cannot by itself prove that another order would have saved everyone.

# Magic Styles
This note is an author and adjudicator crosswalk. It compares the seed's seven
engineered capability families; it is not a table known across Kalsa.
Prometheus arranged the seven Gifts through a development sequence. Each also
has a binary Kaos signature derived from
[[Spoilers/Foundations/Kaos#Author comparison: three axes|Depth, Clarity, and
Scope]]. These systems answer different backstage questions and must not be
collapsed.
The seven Gifts are families of magical capability engineered by Prometheus. Each uses information about possible futures to influence what happens, though its user need not consciously predict anything. This note compares the Gifts for authors and adjudicators. It does not describe a classification known throughout Kalsa.
## Reading the comparison
The table records two separate classifications. The **Promethean Sequence**, written in Roman numerals, gives the Gifts' development order. The **Kaos signature**, written as three binary digits, identifies their combination of [[Spoilers/Foundations/Kaos#Author comparison: three axes|Depth, Clarity, and Scope]]:
- **Depth** concerns how far an outcome can depart from what would probably happen without intervention. It does not mean how far into the future a Gift reaches.
- **Clarity** concerns how precisely a mage can consciously distinguish causes, dependencies, and ways to intervene.
- **Scope** concerns how far information or influence reaches across space and time while remaining coherent.
The signature lists these axes in the order Depth, Clarity, Scope, with `1` marking an included axis. Thus Sorcery is Sequence II but signature `100`: its place in development and its capabilities are different pieces of information. Current reference prose must not use “Type II” without stating which classification it means.
**Null** names the absence of an expressed Gift. It is included for comparison, not as an eighth Gift.

Sequence numbers, signatures, axes, and these standardized English style names are author vocabulary. They may appear as in-world knowledge only when an owning note attributes their recovery to a particular archive or tradition. Polity and institution notes establish what living people call their abilities, how they explain them, and where they disagree. People with similar capacities need not share a theory of magic.

## Founding and joining divine hierarchies
## Root and composite strains
The **God-foundation** column records whether a strain can independently found a God Beast. The seed identifies Luck, Sorcery, and Analysis as capable of doing so. These are the three **root strains**.
Luck, Sorcery, and Analysis are the three root strains and are marked in the seed as independently capable of founding God Beasts. Shamanism, Prophecy, Channeling, and Intuition are composite strains and normally enlarge or shape an existing divine hierarchy rather than founding one unaided.
Shamanism, Prophecy, Channeling, and Intuition combine axes and are called **composite strains**. They normally enlarge or shape an existing divine hierarchy rather than found one unaided. Their “no” entries record that normal limitation; whether exceptions exist remains unresolved. The reason root strains can stabilize independent gods is also unresolved.
Why root folds stabilize independent gods and whether exceptions exist remain unresolved. The old unexplained `(1)/(0)` notation is retired in favor of the named **God-foundation** field.
The named God-foundation field replaces the seed's unexplained `(1)/(0)` notation.
## Expression and descent
The old phrase “genetic marker” is treated as shorthand for a heritable strain-complex with threshold expression. Expression depends on inheritance, developmental activation or pressing need, training, and relations with Beasts or gods. More than one style can occur in a person; this does not automatically create a new binary signature.
An inherited strain does not necessarily become an active Gift. The older phrase “genetic marker” is shorthand for a heritable complex whose expression must cross a threshold. Whether and how it expresses depends on inheritance, developmental activation or pressing need, training, and relations with Beasts or gods. One person can express more than one style, but that does not automatically give them a new binary signature.
The post-Fall “fading of the blood of Fire” describes the reduced frequency of strongly expressed, internally compatible strains after warfare, selective religious celibacy, migration, and recombination. It does not make mixed people lesser. Noble and isolated lineages preserve higher expression frequencies, while their claims of purity remain political claims.
After the Fall, strongly expressed strains that were internally compatible became less common. Warfare, selective religious celibacy, migration, and recombination contributed to this change, described as the “fading of the blood of Fire.” Noble and isolated lineages retain higher frequencies of expression. That does not establish their political claims of purity or make mixed people lesser.
The exact inheritance model, frequency of multistyle expression, and relation between one person and one or several Chaos Beasts remain unresolved.
The exact rules of inheritance remain unresolved. So do the frequency of multistyle expression and whether one person relates to one Chaos Beast or several.
## Observability
## What the Gifts can reveal
Each style exposes different evidence. See [[Spoilers/Foundations/Kaos#Observing Kaos|Observing Kaos]]. Luck cannot be directly detected; prophecy can only infer its bias. Analysis reads altered systems, prophecy reads deformed forecasts, channeling reads active flows, and shamanism reads pressure on a bonded target.
There is no single way to detect all magical activity. Each Gift makes different evidence available, as detailed in [[Spoilers/Foundations/Kaos#Observing Kaos|Observing Kaos]].
## Interaction
Analysis can read changes in a system. Prophecy can notice distortions in forecasts. Channeling senses active flows, while shamanism senses pressure on a bonded target. These are different kinds of evidence, with different limits.
All seven Gifts are differently shaped oracular operations. Conscious
prediction is not the boundary of the category. Their effects do not add into
one shared perception score and do not cancel through a universal contest.
[[Spoilers/Foundations/Oracle Ecology|Oracle Ecology]] owns how their users,
Beasts, and hierarchies crowd, occlude, converge upon, or capture reachable
futures.
Luck cannot be detected directly. Prophecy may infer its persistent bias from patterns in the futures it encounters, but that inference does not amount to seeing a luck-user.

## Style notes

## How the Gifts affect one another
The current polity notes preserve source strands without treating engineered tendencies as the total character of a people. Prometheus's games, inherited constraints, in-world prejudice, institutional adaptation, and individual agency must be kept separate in future repair.
All seven Gifts are oracular operations: they connect action in the present with possible futures, whether or not their users receive a conscious prediction. Their different capacities cannot be added into one perception score, and opposing Gifts do not cancel each other through a universal contest.
Their users, Beasts, and divine hierarchies can make one another's futures harder to reach or read. They can also make the same futures more reachable, or gain control over the routes by which those futures could occur. [[Spoilers/Foundations/Oracle Ecology|Oracle Ecology]] owns the explanation of this crowding, occlusion, convergence, and capture.

## Gifts and peoples
The linked polity notes preserve the seed's accounts without treating an engineered tendency as the whole character of a people. Future revisions must distinguish what Prometheus designed his games to produce, what inherited constraints remain, what inhabitants believe about one another, how institutions have adapted, and what individuals choose. None of these alone explains a culture.
