## Aether
Aetheria’s namesake is the now-defunct scientific concept of aether, a propagation medium for light waves. In Elysium, aether is real, and this static reference frame can be manipulated to enable phenomena considered impossible in the universe as we know it. The Aetheric Field permeates all of Elysium and is essential to its function as an inescapable garden-prison for sentient life. It is an extremely high-level construct of the very technology humanity began to scratch the surface of when it started messing with FTL travel.
### What the Field Answers To
The aether does not obey rules the way flat-space physics does. It is anchored by the cognition of the minds living inside it ([[Cognitive Interfacing]]), and it settles toward whatever those minds take for granted. Reality has been demonstrably stranger ever since the Timeless’ contingency shunted us here, and some, [[Megiddo]] loudest among them, conclude that Elysium is not real at all: a simulation held together by its residents’ attention. They may well be right about the mechanism. It changes nothing. There is no going back, so this is all we have, and it is as real as it needs to be.
What we can say about how the field behaves:
- **Consensus beats will.** The aether bends toward what most nearby minds expect. A lone [[Esper]] in deep space can do things the same esper cannot do on a crowded station, where ten thousand people assume the ordinary. This is why flat space holds in the core worlds and frays at the periphery ([[Pseudospace]]).
- **Belief is load-bearing.** If the public is convinced a product works, it works. If a maker persuades enough people it has invented spatial expansion, the tamper-proof black box that makes your cargo bay bigger on the inside can be empty, or full of nonsense, and the bay is still bigger. By the same mechanism, the corporate campaign to discredit espers is not only public relations: a public that is sure espers are frauds makes them weaker.
- **It answers to a self, not to compute.** Processing power alone does nothing. The aether responds to a mind that wants something, which is why the accelerated brainwashing that makes uploads compliant also destroys their ability to touch it. You cannot simulate a will, so you have to harvest one ([[Necrotech]]). The physics does not care how the mind was obtained.
- **Small effects go unopposed.** An effect too minor for anyone to hold an opinion about meets no resistance. Nobody’s worldview depends on their fridge’s Carnot efficiency, so a sliver of borrowed will can quietly cheat thermodynamics there. The more an effect contradicts what people expect, the more mind it takes to hold it.
- **Information density distorts.** Dense concentrations of information warp the field, so data cores and Aethernet hubs are pockets of local strangeness.
- **Holding takes attention.** An effect lasts only while something keeps attending to it.

Elysium is a much stranger place than the core worlds would have you believe. They talk about pseudospace like it’s an incursion, a rift intruding upon their stable reality. But we brought flat space with us, we are the incursion. This universe’s natural state is one of chaos, alternate spatial topologies, twisted manifolds of space and time abound out there, and hyper-euclidean space is many times bigger than the flatlanders could ever conceive.
Factions that only bother to explore flat space have a relatively uniform understanding of what to expect, but absolutely anything is possible when one of the corporations is brave enough to go all-in with the project of colonizing and exploiting Wonderland. We have a cultural divide now, between the Chaos factions who live on the periphery of stable Euclidean space, and the Flatlanders who build their camps on the few islands of stability poking from an infinite ocean of madness.

Flat space holds where enough minds expect it to ([[Aether]]). The core worlds stay Euclidean because their populations take Euclid for granted; where people thin out, so does the consensus, and Wonderland comes back.

##### Necrotech
Some corporations leverage the potential of [[Aether]]ic spirit creation ([[Spirits]]) in the ethically dubious practice of breeding genetically engineered human espers and harvesting them en masse to imprint their souls into technological products. These can accomplish roughly the same effects as specialized embodied [[Artificial General Intelligence]], but require regular refueling if they aren’t designed to be disposable. They are more generalizable and faster to develop since they do not require the extensive work of iterating on embodied AGI minds, but greater per-unit costs means they lose out in economies of scale for mass-produced items.

The aether answers only to a mind that wants something, and a will cannot be simulated, so it has to be harvested. That is the whole economic case for the necrofactory.
### The Spectrum
Not every imprint is a person. An imprinted Aetheric Resonance Interface is not quite conscious, and the ones the factories churn out are much less so: a single recorded intention, playing on a loop, used to automate cheap, reproducible aetheric effects. You might have one in your fridge to improve its Carnot efficiency, a manufactured ghost in the machine sitting right next to the brainwashed upload that turns it into a smart fridge, the one that orders groceries when you run low and compliments your children on their terrible artwork when you stick it to the door with a magnet.
ARIs exist on a spectrum of complexity, and price climbs with how far an effect bends reality:
- **Factory stamps** do things too small for anyone to notice or contest: the fridge, a quieter heat exchanger, a battery that sags a little less.
- **Imprinted ARIs** keep more of their source mind and can push harder, as long as they do not contradict what the people around them expect. They cost more to make and more to keep fed.
- **Bound powerful espers** are the only ARIs that can hold an effect against consensus, and only they retain some semblance of comprehensible mortal habits. The habits are not a side effect. They are the part of the mind that can still push.
### Perception
As with other questionable and horrifying corporate practices, a lot of effort is spent in managing public perception of the technology. Only countercultural dissidents ever call it necrotech or their production lines necrofactories. The corporations themselves prefer to label them *Aetheric Resonance Interfaces*, making it sound like an advanced energy phenomenon rather than forced spirit entrapment. The media is flooded with propaganda explaining how necrotech is "completely humane" and "scientifically proven" to be non-conscious. For nearly every unit sold that is technically true, which is what makes it such an effective lie: it says nothing about the top of the spectrum, or about the espers bred and spent to make the cheap ones.

## Megiddo
Defensive technology. Megiddo sells walls, and its brand is holding: a Megiddo barrier does not degrade while the fight lasts.
> A wall is not a weapon. It does not need to be clever, or fast, or new. It needs to be there when the sky opens, and it needs to be there afterwards. Ours have been.
### Doctrine
Megiddo teaches that Elysium is not real. Aether and [[Pseudospace]] are side effects of existing in a simulation anchored only by the cognition of its residents, and the strangeness that has grown since the Timeless’ contingency is evidence of it. To Megiddo, Elysium is an exile, a false land, and waking from it is the return.
They are right about the mechanism ([[Aether]]) and wrong that there is a way out. Nobody goes back.
The doctrine is also their engineering. If reality is held up by attention, then a wall stands because someone refuses to stop believing in it, and Megiddo crews are trained to keep that belief through the moment the sky opens.
